£57,600 University bursaries awarded to Bedford students

11 Aug 2022

Students from across the Borough have been awarded financial bursaries to help them make the most of their academic potential.

16 students from low-income families have been awarded £3,600 each over the course of their degree studies.

This year’s awardees are from Bedford Academy, Bedford College, Bedford Sixth Form, Biddenham International School, Kimberley STEM College, Mark Rutherford School, Sharnbrook Academy, and St Thomas More Secondary School and Sixth Form.

Community programmes director at the Harpur Trust, Lucy Bardner, said: “We know from research that students from low-income backgrounds are much more likely to have to work long hours alongside their studies and suffer greater anxiety about student debts.

“This can have a double impact – both on their studies, but also on their ability to get involved with all the opportunities student life provides.

“As a Trust we want to help more of Bedford’s young people facing disadvantage to achieve their potential, and the University Bursary Programme has so far supported over 250 students to do just that.”

The University Bursary Programme accepts applicants every year and is open to low-income students who attend one of the eight participating schools and colleges in Bedford Borough.
