Bedford Modern School continues to go from strength to strength with students achieving success across all areas of school life.
Once again, our A Level results were outstanding with an impressive 18% of A*grades, the highest for five years. A fantastic 50% were A*-A and 94% were graded A*-C. This is particularly significant given that top grades nationally went down. We also celebrated excellent GCSE results with 9, 8 or A* making up 43% of grades, the highest number in the school’s history.
In May, HRH The Duke of Gloucester, KG, GCVO, SFI inspected The Harpur Trust schools’ Combined Cadet Forces to mark the centenary of King George V’s visit to Bedford. Additionally, a team of nine cadets from the BMS Army Section claimed first place in the annual Combat Cadet Competition for a second consecutive year; a first for BMS.
In sport we have seen countless accomplishments across the board including everything from endurance horse riding to table tennis and hockey to swimming. In April, Jessica Read was selected for the GB rowing squad at the Munich Junior Regatta and Katie Sumner and Maddie Kent dominated the 10th National Schoolgirls’ Rugby Fives Championships. Footballer Charlie Bramwell joined the ISFA U14 National Representative A Squad and during the summer Eda Colliver, was called up to represent Great Britain at the European Junior Water Polo Championships in Greece.
Music and drama play a central role in the life of the School and both Sister Act and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, our two main productions, delighted audiences with tickets for all shows selling out well in advance. Some of our talented students were selected onto prestigious national programmes such as the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, National Youth Theatre, National Youth Jazz Collective and the Aldeburgh Young Musicians. Others enjoyed success at local and regional music and drama festivals and excelled in LAMDA, ISTD and ABRSM examinations at all levels. We all applauded Sixth Form student, Greg May, who made his on-screen debut as the 14 year-old Elton John’s hand double in Rocketman, the epic musical fantasy about the musician’s life. A perfect example of the rich and varied tapestry of life at BMS.
